Our History

The Hye-Way Haus had 16 rooms at one time – 9 downstairs and 7 upstairs. There was no plumbing inside the house. Built by the Dieke family in 1924, who raised 11 kids in this house – 9 boys and 2 girls. The boys had their own baseball team, and as a promotional stunt for a coffee company, they were invited to compete in a baseball tournament against two other all-brother teams.

The family ran a cotton gin that sat on the edge of the property. Remains of this structure are still visible on the east side of the property. At that time, Highway 290 was a dirt road and cotton was still growing in the Hill Country.  The neighboring ranch was owned by the Johnsons, of which President Lyndon B Johnson was born. The President, just a boy at that time, would come and play baseball with the Dieke brothers.

The historic post office in Hye is still operational inside Hye Market, right across the street from the haus. Here is where the small town got its name. Hiram G. Brown established the post office and general store in 1886. Everyone called Hiram “Hye”, and it stuck. It was at this post office that President Johnson mailed out his first letter when he was just 4 years old. To learn more about our rich history, come visit and book your stay at the Hye-Way Haus.
